AIB-CIBER Awards

Doctoral Dissertation Proposal Awards
sponsored by Indiana University CIBER

The AIB would like to announce two important changes in the doctoral consortium, which will be initiated this summer in Monterey:

Awards and Research Grants:

In conjunction with the Indiana University CIBER, we are pleased to announce two new awards for which doctoral consortium participants may compete:

(1)AIB-CIBER Dissertation Research Grants

These awards (up to $1000 per award) will be given to doctoral students that demonstrate a specific need for funding related to their dissertations. To qualify for these awards, students must have defended their PhD qualifying exams (prelims, orals, etc), but need not have defended their thesis proposal. Students should complete a three-page document which includes the following:
  • a summary of the research,
  • expected contributions,
  • relation to the literature,
  • methodology
  • and budget.

The budget should clearly identify the specific purpose for which funds are needed (e.g., purchasing data, international travel, preparing surveys, etc..) and the amount of funds requested. Research grants will be awarded to students on the basis of the quality of their grant proposal and their specific funding requests.

(2)AIB-CIBER Dissertation Proposal Awards

These awards (up to $800) per award will be given to doctoral students based upon the quality of their dissertation proposal and its anticipated contribution to basic or applied knowledge in International Business. This competition is open to students who expect to have defended their dissertation proposal prior to the AIB meeting this Summer. To compete for this award, students should complete a three-page document which includes the following:
  • a summary of the research,
  • expected contributions,
  • relation to the literature, methodology,
  • and plans for publishing papers from the thesis.

    The faculty participants in the doctoral consortium will review the submissions. Students may be asked to provide additional information such as a copy of their thesis proposals. Students who wish to participate in the doctoral consortium need not apply for either award. To participate in the doctoral consortium only, students should have completed (or be near completion) their PhD qualifying exams and should submit a 1-2 page written summary of their dissertation.

    Faculty participants in this year's doctoral consortium will include Juan Alcacer, Heather Berry, John Cantwell, Tina Dacin, Anil Gupta, Rachelle Sampson and others!

    Doctoral Consortium Format:

    The AIB is revising the format of the doctoral consortium. Consortium participants will now be given approximately 10 minutes each to give a brief presentation of their dissertation. Students whose work is more preliminary may use their time to solicit advice or ask questions of the other consortium participants (both faculty and students). Students who pick the Q&A option should come with specific questions/issues they want to discuss. Students who are competing for either of the awards are required to present their dissertations. All students are encouraged to use their time for Q&A or thesis presentation, regardless of whether they choose to compete for an award.

    Following the student presentations, consortium participants and faculty will form break-out groups to discuss the students' research. At the end of the doctoral consortium, students and faculty will be asked to provide feedback about the doctoral consortium so that we may improve upon the format in future meetings. All students should include in their cover letter (email) a brief discussion of what they hope to get out of the doctoral consortium (e.g., advice on specific research questions, advice on research methodology, ideas about publishing work from the thesis, networking with faculty and other doctoral students, etc.). At the end of the consortium, students will be asked to provide feedback about whether the consortium addressed their specific issues/questions.
